Nollywood stars turned out at the Indigo O2 for the premiere of the anticipated movie, Turning Point. The movie stars Ghanaian star actress Jackie Appiah, Nollywood screen diva Oge Okoye and US based actress KD Aubert.
It is set in New York and Lagos and tells the story of a US-based Nigerian investment banker that bows to family pressure to abandon his American sweetheart for an arranged wife from home. His life turns upside-down when the marriage turns out not too rosy, setting off a chain of events that forces him to confront his reckless past.
“It has a very strong theme of ethnic prejudice and we are looking at the interactions between black nations, black Americans, Caribbeans and Africans in general. I chose to shoot in Lagos since it is a melting pot for many cultures,” Towolawi explains.
Towolawi adds, “These are established actors in Hollywood and have featured in top rated films and series like Law and Order, Everybody Hates Chris, Apocalypse and Spanish Fly respectively.”
He is however quick to defend his decision to cast Appiah in the movie.
“She cuts the picture of the character I had in mind (very homely in appearance and almost innocent.) She is a Ghanaian, and I thought why not. I was not aware of how strong the Ghanaian accent was until when we were actually shooting in Lagos and the Ghanaian accent stood out the more.
In the grand scheme of things we have Nigerian, Caribbean, American and Black American accents in the film. So, I thought: ‘Why no? Let’s throw some Ghanaian accent into the mix’ and the result has been fantastic. With my films, I look for actors that fit the part instead of looking for the most marketable.”
Towolawi, who has a degree in Mathematics from the University of Manchester, and a Masters in Computer Science from Oxford University in the UK, hopes to correct the erroneous impression that is being held by foreigners in terms of the quality of Nollywood films. Saying he he has budgeted about N1.5m for Turning Point, he notes that his first movie, Twisted, did well within and outside Nigeria.
Seems to be a must watch movie!
