Mid Week Message: Your Tongue = Your Destiny!

Posted on 5:25 PM by rendy orton

By Chi Eze

The words we utter from our mouth are so powerful, but the most worrying thing is that many of us do not know to which extent these words determines our destiny. Do you know that many people have died untimely due to their ignorant use of words?

If someone makes a mistake that they are not too proud of and says out loudly that they are stupid, they may not realise that they are confessing that weakness over their life.  It's like the person casts a spell over themselves without realising.

We may have called ourselves all sorts of names in the past and saw it as nothing. Little did we not realise that we are planting a seed for the devil to nurture.
In the past I have broken up with ex's and called myself stupid for even dating them, I have literally said it out loudly without thinking of any consequence that could befall me for saying such.

You see the devil cannot read your thoughts but he can certainly hear your words. Be careful of what you say over your life. Never speak negatively about yourself, wish anyone evil or say that they can't  achieve something when they share their dreams.

I was in service a few weeks back and my pastor preached a message that really hit home. She spoke of the true story of a Godly woman who lived in America and was fairly young (in her mid 30's) This lady had spent a good part of her life working in the church and was a born again Christian.

She was friendly and popular within the older generation of church goers so she would always speak with them, share jokes and make gists whenever they mentioned her coming of age saying that she did not want to grow old. It was something she said often and took lightly. She would always say, "I don't want to ever grow old, I want to be young and youthful."

Some time later the lady started to feel ill and was soon diagnosed by a Doctor as having a terminal illness. Naturally she was devastated  as she couldn't understand why something so terrible could happen to someone so Godly as herself. She had always had a close relationship with God so she rejected the doctors report that she had few months left to live and decided to go into prayer and seek God's face for a miracle.

After crying to God a message came to her and she was made to understand that there was a magnificent amount of power in her words. The reason she was sick today, was because of the words she had been saying over a period of time. Every time she had said that she did not want to grow old, the devil was there listening and using it as a challenge over her life.

We must remember that the devil challenged Jesus Christ right from the beginning when he offered Him all the glory of the world. Luke 4.5-7 says, "The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world. And he said to him, "I will give you all their authority and splendour, for it has been given to me, and I can give it to anyone I want to. So if you worship me, it will all be yours."

The devil has been given power to challenge Christ and he does that over us from time to time. When we sin and do thing we know we shouldn't he is there challenging Christ saying, "Look this is your so called child."

When we say that we are sick, or that we are useless and cannot make it, the devil uses that as a point of contact to challenge God and he is able to make that word a reality when serious prayer is not applied to counter act it. That is why prayer and a meaningful relationship with God is so essential. We constantly battle against principalities we cannot see or understand.

Proverbs 18.21 says, "The tongue has the power of life and death,
and those who love it will eat its fruit."
But we underestimate the impact that our tongue has in deciding and guiding our destiny. Your tongue is the reason you are where you are today. if you have allowed God to guide it, then it is likely that you are living a happier and more fulfilled life than a loud mouthed person that lacks self control. Learn to guard yours as if it were precious stones. It is not every thought you have in your head that needs to be shared.

The lady who was terminally ill was told that her sickness resulted from the words she casually spoke over her life. Every time she said she did not want to grow old, the devil heard it and held it against her. As she was drawing closer to her older age, the fulfilment of her words had to come to pass. The devil wanted to win over her life and fulfil that which she had spoken, so that she would not grow old but die untimely.

Fortunately for her she had a relationship with God that allowed her to seek His face and pray for forgiveness for the things she said as a joke. The lady survived and was healed miraculously to the surprise of Doctors.

In the same service another story of a couple who lived in Onitsha in Anambra State in Nigeria was also mentioned.  The couple were incredibly poor even though they worked hard and were the biggest helpers in their church. Their situation was so bad and they could barely afford to eat.

The pastor recalled how one day a senior pastor tired of seeing their suffering decided enough is enough. He felt there was more to their story, and he was indeed right. The couple were taken to a room to pray and after few hours the woman fell under unction and was in a trance. Once she woke up she was asked to recall what she had seen in her trance.

She recalled that she had seen herself as a baby on her mothers back, in that vision her mother had been fighting with another lady a neighbour of theirs and the both of them were very angry. She heard her mother say to the other lady that if she didn't leave a mark on her by fighting her, that her daughter on her back would never prosper in life. She then saw as argument dissolved and her mother did not so much as touch the other lady. Her mother did not realise the massive curse she had placed on her daughters life.

The poor couples current situation could finally be traced to careless words her mum had said over her as a baby. After prayers the couples problems almost seemed to disappeared over night.

A lot of us are suffering because of things that we have said over our lives and that of others. We need to pray for God to guard our tongues and forgive any careless words we have said over our lives.

I have been guilty of speaking out things which are negative, both intended and others as a joke but I have now learnt to be careful and rebuke every negative word that I say.

Claim blessings, even when your world feels like the world  is crashing down, never give the devil and stage to come and reign havoc in your life. Never allow him to change your destiny.

Jesus is still, and will always be Lord.
